August Assignment Meetup — Depth of Field

  • Third Place Coffee Shop 1811 Glenwood Avenue Raleigh, NC, 27608 United States (map)

Join Oak City Clicks for our August Assignment Meetup as we explore aperture, focus, and depth of field — one of the most powerful creative tools in photography.

This month’s lesson focuses on how aperture settings affect the look and feel of an image, including background blur, subject separation, and overall sharpness. Members will learn how photographers intentionally control focus to guide the viewer’s attention and create mood within a photograph.

Together, we’ll discuss concepts including:

  • Aperture and f-stop settings

  • Shallow vs. deep depth of field

  • Background blur and subject separation

  • Focus as a storytelling tool

  • Aperture Priority shooting mode

We’ll review the month’s assignment, discuss creative approaches, and explore how focus and blur can dramatically change the emotional impact of an image.

Members are encouraged to bring their cameras and participate in discussion about:

  • Favorite lenses for portraits or landscapes

  • Camera settings and focus questions

  • Creative successes and challenges

  • Photography goals and techniques they want to improve

As a group, we’ll also plan a mid-month workshop meetup where members can practice photographing together while experimenting with aperture settings and creative focus techniques in the field.

Assignment submissions for Depth of Field are due by Monday, August 31 for Members’ Choice voting. The winning image will be announced during the September Assignment Meetup.

Whether you’re learning Aperture Priority mode for the first time or refining your creative control of focus and blur, these meetups are designed to help photographers grow through education, hands-on practice, and community.
