Join Oak City Clicks for our October Assignment Meetup as we explore available light photography and the creative challenges of shooting after dark.
This month’s lesson focuses on ISO settings, low-light exposure, and learning how photographers work with existing light sources to create atmosphere, mood, and storytelling. From neon signs and city streets to candlelight and evening landscapes, low-light photography encourages photographers to slow down, observe light carefully, and make intentional creative choices.
Together, we’ll discuss concepts including:
ISO and sensor sensitivity
Available light photography
Balancing aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
Noise and grain
Night photography techniques
White balance and color temperature
We’ll review the month’s assignment and discuss how light shapes mood, emotion, and visual storytelling within a photograph.
Members are encouraged to bring their cameras and participate in conversation about:
Shooting in challenging lighting conditions
Favorite nighttime photography subjects
Exposure and camera setting questions
Creative successes and frustrations while photographing after dark
As a group, we’ll also plan a mid-month workshop meetup where members can practice low-light photography together while exploring Raleigh’s evening atmosphere through a creative and social photo outing.
Assignment submissions for Light After Dark are due by Monday, November 30 for Members’ Choice voting. The winning image will be announced during the December Assignment Meetup.
Whether you’re learning how to photograph in low light for the first time or refining your ability to create atmosphere with available light, these meetups are designed to help photographers grow through education, experimentation, and community.
